Building Christ's church - person by person
S - Eph 2:19 (NASB)
19 So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints, and are of God’s household, 20 having been built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus Himself being the corner stone, 21 in whom the whole building, being fitted together, is growing into a holy temple in the Lord, 22 in whom you also are being built together into a dwelling of God in the Spirit.
O - This visual revelation of God's church being built is one Paul paints for us so that we will understand who we are. He is explaining it primarily to a the church at ephesia who likely had many gentile converts in it, and the context of much of what he is writing is to describe the grace and free gift of salvation which is not through our works, and not for only God's chosen people, the Israelites. Instead he describes a church built on the foundation and cornerstone of our redeemer Christ, who paid the price for our sins and inequity, to resolve us once and for all with the Father in Heaven. Then Christ church began to be built on this, that person by person those who believe in Him, repent and confess that Jesus is their Lord and savior, they would be added to the church. We cannot make the church, but we can join the church.
A - The application for me is just to rejoice in the mental image of Christ church being the body of believers united in commitment to Christ, linked to the Holy Spirit for guidance and direction, and united in our worship and praise for the Father who is in heaven.
P - Dear heavenly Father, thank you for your gift of salvation, and the gift of your church, your holy spirit, and the gift of your son. I pray all this in Jesus Christ name, Amen.
